With winter approaching, a pair of cosy, woollen socks are all but essential to see you through till Spring, so why not join us and create your perfect (and sustainable) pair for yourself or for you to gift.

This will be an informal, introductory workshop, suitable for beginners where you will learn the skills needed to continue your wool dyeing practice at home.

Using Ros’s signature British Wool Socks, you will learn how to naturally dye them in a colour of your choice. There will be 3 different dye pots to choose from, enabling a range of different shades from bright to subtle. Dip dye, solid dye, tie dye or double dye - the possibilities for creating your bespoke socks are endless.

You will lean how to prepare wool for dyeing through scouring and mordanting. Working with dye baths created by Ros, you will also dye a few short lengths of yarn, which will be perfect for future darning or gift wrapping.

Ros will also show you examples of her work and discuss together the different natural ingredients that can be used to create a wide palette of colours, responsible foraging and tips on what to look out for throughout the seasons.

Natural dyeing is a process that uses botanical ingredients to dye fabrics in ways that have been used for thousands of years. It is petrochemical free, 100% natural, slow and sustainable.

  • All materials will be provided and there will be a worksheet for you to keep as well as your yarn & socks.
  • You will be able to dye more than one pair by preordering an extra pair for £14 should you wish.
  • Tea, coffee, and biscuits will be provided.
  • Please bring an apron or wear old clothes that you wouldn’t mind getting marked.

About Natural Dyeworks

The Natural Dyeworks was founded by Ros, a natural dyer living in the Kent countryside. Ros makes small batch, slow-crafted accessories and homewares using the alchemy of 100% plant-based dyes, which are natural and non-toxic.

Using natural fibres including linen, silk & wool, she crafts an ever-evolving palette of colours through the use of petals, leaves, bark, roots & seeds. Nettles in spring for cool greens, coreopsis in summer for wild oranges, hollyhocks in autumn for soft blues, and  alder cones in winter for burnished golds. Ingredients are foraged in the Kent countryside, grown on her allotment or sourced from food waste/sustainable sources.

The process is 100% natural, slow and sustainable and care for the environment is at the heart of The Natural Dyeworks. Wastewater is reused on the garden and allotment, dye pulp is composted which in turn feeds our soil.

There will be refreshments served in the middle of 2 and a Half hour session, so that we can get to know each other.
