With expert weaver Dominic Parrette, learn how to weave your own traditional shallow frame basket using willow.

About this event

Students will make a shallow round frame basket based on a traditional Irish Sciathog (shield) basket. Skills learnt will be setting a hoop, a weave known as randing with an additional technique known as packing or short rows to keep the weave even. The basket will be approximately 30cm in diameter. This class will be held in our heated Pelargonium House.

"My basketry is grounded in traditional British and European techniques which create beauty in form and function.

I take inspiration from the landscape in which I work and it is important to me that what I do is connected to the rhythm of the seasons and in harmony with the ecology of the natural environment.

The process of growing, harvesting and creating is one of nourishment to me. I hope that my love of the natural world comes out in some small way in my baskets. "
